Convoy Commune

Convoy Commune is a neighbourhood cafe on Mitchell Street in Merewether that trades hard on good coffee, acai bowls and a covered outdoor deck where dogs are welcome. It opens early, which makes it the natural end point for a beachside walk rather than a lunchtime detour.

The dog setup

Dogs sit with you in the alfresco and street-side outdoor seating, a covered deck with room to settle a dog beside the table. There is no dedicated dog menu, so bring your own water bowl and ask staff for a top-up if you plan to linger. The space is relaxed and the staff are used to dogs arriving straight off the coastal paths.

On the menu

The menu leans into brunch: the house acai bowls are the signature, including the Convoy OG with house-roasted maple and pecan granola, banana, berries, coconut flakes and cacao nibs. Alongside them sit toasties, toasted croissants with smoked leg ham and vintage cheddar, smashed avocado and house granola, with rotating sweet specials. There are vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options across the board.

Hours and getting there

Find it at Shop 1, 88 Mitchell Street, Merewether. Doors open 6am Monday to Saturday and 7am on Sunday, with everything winding up early afternoon, so a post-walk coffee is the reliable play. Street parking runs along Mitchell Street and the surrounding blocks.

Make a day of it

Merewether's own dog off-leash area is close by, and Dixon Park Reserve on Ocean Street runs timed leash-free hours for dogs who would rather swim than sniff. For a guaranteed all-hours run, the harbour-side Horseshoe Beach is a ten-minute drive north with calm water and wash-down showers. If you are making a morning of it on the strip, Sidetrack Coffee and Paper Run Espresso are both within easy on-lead walking distance.

Weekday mornings are the calmest time to claim a deck table. This is a proper sit-down brunch spot with the dog rather than a grab-and-go window, so arrive early and settle in.
