Modus Merewether

Modus Merewether is a working brewery and taproom on Merewether Street, a few minutes walk up from the beach and a regular landing spot for locals finishing the coastal walk. Dogs are welcome, and the covered outdoor patio is where they settle while the beer keeps moving behind the glass.

The climate-controlled warehouse dining space inside is people only, so this is an outdoor arrangement in every season - the cover helps when the nor'easter picks up. Water bowls are provided, so you can skip packing your own. Keep your dog leashed and close to the table; the patio sits near the brewery action and the room runs lively on weekends.

Modus pours dozens of rotating taps, including its own XPA and IPA alongside guest lines, and the kitchen backs it with casual pub-style food built to pair with a pint - chicken wings, corn chips and steak burritos show up on the regular list. Ordering is via QR code at the table. The operation is certified carbon neutral and the crowd is family-friendly, so expect noise and energy rather than a quiet corner. Doors open from midday most days, with extended evening trading Thursday to Saturday.

Getting there and parking

The address is 20 Merewether Street, Merewether. Street parking is the main option and it tightens up on weekends and evenings, so coming on foot from the surrounding streets is often easier than circling for a spot.

Close by with the dogs

The Bathers Way coastal walk starts practically at the door and makes a good on-leash warm-up before lunch. For a proper off-leash run, the Merewether dog off-leash area is close by, and Horseshoe Beach near Nobbys is the city's dedicated off-leash dog beach, about a 13 minute drive north. If you want a coffee stop first, Sunnyboy Kiosk at Dixon Park is dog friendly and an easy walk up the hill.
