Bathers Way to Newcastle

Bathers Way runs about 9.7 km along the Newcastle coast from Merewether Ocean Baths north to Nobbys, and it is one of the few long coastal walks in New South Wales a dog can do end to end on lead. The catch is the sand: the path welcomes dogs, the patrolled beaches beside it do not.

The walk

Budget two and a half to three hours for the full route at a dog-friendly pace, on a sealed shared path that is wide enough to walk two abreast. The climbing concentrates around the headlands rather than spreading through the route, and starting at Merewether keeps the ocean on your right the whole way north.

It is a linear walk, so plan a return leg or catch a bus back from the city end. If you only want the best stretch, street parking around Bar Beach and Dixon Park drops you into the middle section without committing to the full distance.

Leash status

City of Newcastle manages the path, and dogs are welcome on a hand-held leash along the entire route but are prohibited on the sand at the patrolled beaches, including Merewether, Bar and Newcastle Beach. One section is completely off limits: the elevated Newcastle Memorial Walk bans dogs outright, so use the footpath along Memorial Drive to bypass it.

The path runs directly above the beaches and the access ramps are easy to wander down without thinking, so watch the signed boundaries at each entrance. Runners and cyclists carry real speed along here, especially at dawn, so a lead you can shorten quickly beats a long line.

Water and hazards

There are taps near the surf clubs along the route, but the gaps between them are long on a hot day, so carry your own supply. Shade is scarce across the whole path, and the headland climbs will test dogs that are not used to hard surface kilometres.

Getting there

The car park at Merewether Ocean Baths is the usual southern start and fills early on sunny weekends, so arrive before the beach crowd or start midweek. Buses run along the coast road if you want a one-way plan.

Make a day of it

For time off the lead, the King Edward Park Off-leash Area sits beside the route near the city end with sunrise-to-sunset access, and Horseshoe Beach near Nobbys is Newcastle's dedicated dog beach for a swim finish.

Coffee at the southern end is easy at Blue Door Kiosk, and The Crown & Anchor Hotel takes dogs in the city.
