Bathers Way to Newcastle

Bathers Way runs 9.7 km along the Newcastle coast from Merewether north toward Nobbys, and it is one of the few long coastal walks in New South Wales a dog can do end to end on lead. The catch is the sand. The path is open to dogs, the patrolled beaches beside it are not.

The walk. Around two and a half to three hours for the full 9.7 km, rated moderate. The surface is sealed shared path almost the whole way, wide enough to walk two abreast, with the climbing concentrated around the headlands rather than spread through the route. It is linear, so plan a return leg or a bus back. Starting at Merewether Ocean Baths and heading north keeps the ocean on your right the whole way.

The rules. City of Newcastle manages the pathway. Dogs are allowed on lead along the coastal path and are prohibited on the sand at the patrolled beaches, including Merewether and Bar Beach. The distinction matters more than it sounds, because the path runs directly above those beaches and the access ramps are easy to wander down without thinking about it. Council signs the boundary at each beach entrance.

Water. Carry your own. There are taps near the surf clubs along the route, but the gaps between them are long on a hot day and the path has very little shade.

Getting there. The car park at Merewether Ocean Baths is the usual southern start and fills on sunny weekends. Street parking around Bar Beach and Dixon Park drops you into the middle section if you only want part of the walk.

Nearby with the dogs. For a run off lead, the Merewether Dog Off-Leash Area sits beside the route, and King Edward Park is further north along the same walk. Check the signed hours at both, because several Newcastle reserves are off lead only outside the middle of the day. Blue Door Kiosk is a short walk from the Merewether end, and The Crown and Anchor Hotel takes dogs at the city end.

When to go. Early morning, particularly in summer, when the sealed path is still cool and the crowds are thin. Weekday mornings are quietest. Good for big runners with the legs for nine kilometres of hard surface.
