Mio Spazio Cafe

Mio Spazio sits on the Cotton Tree Esplanade in Maroochydore, directly across the road from the Maroochy River parklands. It is a low-key coffee and light lunch spot rather than a destination brunch, and for dog owners its best feature is the position: paved outdoor tables facing the water, with Cotton Tree Park on the other side of the street for the before or after walk.

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating, and the tables facing the river have enough space between them for a dog to settle beside you without blocking the footpath. The area is shaded through the morning, which matters on the Sunshine Coast. Staff are used to dogs dropping in on a foreshore walk, though bringing your own water bowl saves asking.

The kitchen runs homemade breakfast and lunch: sandwiches on Turkish bread, savoury quiches, muffins and the French toast and eggs benedict that regulars order, at prices below most of the Cotton Tree strip. There are solid vegetarian and gluten free options, and the coffee is consistent. It opens at 6:30am daily and closes at 3pm.

The vibe

Quiet and local, with walkers, swimmers from the Cotton Tree pool and river fishers cycling through rather than a scene. Weekdays are easy to get a table; from about 8:30 to 10am the coffee crush takes hold and the best shaded spots go first.

Pepsi: sit on the river side, keep the lead through the chair leg, and watch for the magpies that patrol the esplanade tables for toast crusts.

Getting there and parking

The address is 1/20-22 Esplanade, Cotton Tree. Street parking runs along the Esplanade and the side streets behind it, and it tightens on weekends and through the mid morning rush, so a weekday visit is the easier parking. The whole precinct is flat and walkable, and the cafe sits on the foreshore path that links the river mouth to the beach.

Close by with the dogs

The foreshore and Cotton Tree Park are on-leash under council rules, with dogs kept clear of playgrounds and barbecue areas. For an actual off-leash run, the riverside Unfenced Dog Leash Free Park on Bradman Avenue is a few minutes away, and Criminal Coffee Company is another dog-friendly table further inland.
