Chester Z

Chester Z is a small local espresso bar in the Candlewood Village Shopping Centre at 14/45 Candlewood Boulevard, Joondalup, and it is one of the more dog-welcoming coffee stops in the area. Dogs sit with you at the outdoor tables, and the kitchen makes its own dog treats, which is the reason so many regulars arrive on four legs.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the casual outdoor seating, on lead, and the staff greet visiting dogs warmly as a matter of routine. The house-made dog treats get consistently good reviews from the dogs themselves, which is more than most cafes can claim. The village setting is quiet compared to the Joondalup centre, so a settled dog has an easy morning of it.

Worth knowing

This is an espresso and quick-bite bar rather than a big sit-down breakfast kitchen: the focus is specialty coffee that local enthusiasts rate highly, plus a rotating cabinet of freshly baked muffins, slices and sweet treats, with the peanut butter and chocolate slice a recurring favourite. Hours are early: 5:30am to 12pm Tuesday to Friday and 6am to 11:30am Saturday and Sunday, closed Mondays, so plan the visit for the morning.

Getting there and parking

Candlewood Village has its own off-street parking, which makes this one of the easier coffee stops in Joondalup to drive into. It sits in the residential pocket north-east of the city centre, well away from the traffic around the station.

Close by with the dogs

Elcar Park Fenced Dog Park gives dogs a secure run nearby, and the Lake Joondalup Circuit is a solid on-lead walk worth doing before coffee. For a proper off-lead beach session, Hillarys Dog Beach is a 10 to 15 minute drive south. If you are caffeinating across a week, Diesel Espresso Bar is the suburb's other dedicated espresso stop.
