La Luna Cafe

La Luna Cafe is a small, cosy coffee spot at 45 Henley Beach Road in Henley Beach South, opposite Henley High School, and it is one of the more genuinely dog-friendly cafes on this stretch. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables out front, and staff have a habit of bringing out a treat or a puppacino without being asked.

The dog setup

Seating for dogs is the handful of pavement tables at the front, on lead. The space is compact, so a calm dog that is happy to lie at your feet suits it better than one that needs room to sprawl. There is no printed dog menu, but the casual welcome is the reason locals walking the neighbourhood keep coming back with their dogs in tow.

Worth knowing

The kitchen covers classic breakfast and brunch plates, light meals and small plates, backed by specialty coffee, teas, smoothies and a cabinet of cakes and sweet treats. Hours run 6am to 1:30pm Tuesday to Friday, 7am to 12:30pm Saturday, and the cafe is closed both Monday and Sunday, so a weekend visit means Saturday morning only.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Henley Beach Road just off the main drag, with on-street parking on the surrounding residential streets. It is a quick detour from the Esplanade if you are walking the coastal path, and the number 130 bus route along Henley Beach Road stops nearby for anyone arriving without a car.

While you're out there

The foreshore is a few blocks west. On the sand, City of Charles Sturt rules apply: during daylight saving (October to March) dogs are on-lead between 10am and 8pm and off-lead outside those hours, with the whole stretch effectively off-lead at any hour outside daylight saving. If you want a guaranteed sandy run, the West Beach dog beach is a few minutes south. Nearby dog-friendly coffee options include Henley Beach Trailer in the same suburb and Henley Breeze Cafe up the coast.
