ONA Coffee House Cafe Fyshwick

ONA Coffee House is the Fyshwick headquarters of one of Australia's best-known specialty roasters, on the Wollongong Street strip in Canberra's light-industrial belt. Dogs are welcome at the covered outdoor tables out front, which makes it an easy bring-the-dog stop for a genuinely serious coffee rather than a compromise.

Dogs are welcome at the paved, covered outdoor seating in front of the cafe, where there is room to tuck a lead out of the walkway. Indoors is off-limits under the usual food rules, with service animals the exception. Staff have a good name for bringing out a water bowl on request, though carrying your own is the safe play in warmer months. Keep the lead short: weekend mornings get lively and the foot traffic through the front tables is constant.

A coffee house first and a brunch spot second. The list runs deep on espresso and filter, with tasting flights for the indecisive, and the kitchen handles Turkish eggs, fritters, sourdough toast and the pastry cabinet, with vegetarian and gluten-free options. It gets busy, and the outdoor tables fill early on weekends. Weekday mid-morning is the calm window if your dog prefers less commotion.

Getting there and parking

The cafe opens from 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, closing mid-afternoon. Free, unmetered street parking is generally ample directly out front and on surrounding streets, which makes arriving with a dog in the car straightforward. Canberra Avenue bus stops are a short walk away, though most visitors drive.

Close by with the dogs

Cup and Coaster on the same street is the fallback when the tables here are full, and Lonsdale Street Roasters is another Fyshwick option. For a leg-stretch before or after, the View Drive Fenced Dog Park at Kingston is a short drive away.
