Tucker

Tucker is the bakery-cafe anchoring the Casuarina Village shopping precinct just off Tweed Coast Road, serving the fast-growing northern NSW coastal estate and its very present dog population. Doors open at 6am weekdays and 7am weekends, trading through to 2pm daily. It has built a genuine dog-friendly reputation on the Tweed Coast, with a proper outdoor terrace rather than a token table by the door, and it sits a short hop from the beach path at Casuarina Beach.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on lead in the front outdoor terrace, sitting alongside your table rather than tucked away at the edge. The cafe stocks doggy biscuit treats that you can buy over the counter, which puts it a step above the average water-bowl-only venue. Water bowls are sometimes out front; as with most busy cafes it is safer to bring your own on weekends. Standard etiquette applies around the food service area and other diners, and the terrace fills quickly at brunch, so a weekday morning gets you the most space.

What is on the plate

The signature is the rosti benedict, a potato rosti base under the eggs that regulars order on sight. The kitchen also runs green eggs with poached eggs and seasonal greens, a chorizo chilli scramble, avocado on toast and hotcakes, plus gourmet brekkie rolls for the takeaway trade. The bakery cabinet handles croissants and fresh bread, and coffee is consistently solid. Breakfast service runs to about 12:30pm before the menu narrows, so early birds get the full board.

Getting there and parking

Find it at T1/480 Casuarina Way, Casuarina NSW 2487, inside the Casuarina Village complex near Coles. The shopping centre car park gives ample free parking with flat, easy access from car to cafe, which matters when your passenger has four legs. From the car park it is a short walk to the terrace tables.

Close by with the dogs

Casuarina Beach is on-lead only: Tweed Shire Council runs its Take the Lead program through this stretch because of beach-nesting birds and turtles, so keep the leash on along the sand and dune accesses. For a proper off-lead run, South Kingscliff Beach north of the Salt boundary to the Cudgen Creek rockwall is a designated off-leash beach, and the Kingscliff Dog off leash area is nearby too.
