Element Cafe & Larder

Element Cafe & Larder runs from Henty Street, Casterton's main drag, opening 8am to 3pm Tuesday through Saturday and closing Sundays and Mondays. It is part cafe, part larder, and it doubles as the town's catering operation. For travellers on the Glenelg Highway with a dog in the ute, the outdoor seating is where you land, and the cafe is known around the district as an accommodating stop for dogs.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, where visitors regularly report a comfortable, relaxed space to sit with a dog waiting at their feet. There is no fenced run here, so keep your dog settled on lead beside the table while the street trade passes by. Casterton is working-dog country and the cafe staff are used to everything from farm dogs to travelling greyhounds, but bring your own water bowl to be safe.

Worth knowing

The bacon and egg focaccia is the thing people come back for, and the breakfast service runs to about 11am before the kitchen leans into lunch. Expect gourmet sandwiches, fresh salads, burgers and a rotating line of house-made pies, tarts and quiches; the lamb korma pie gets a run of raves. The coffee comes out strong and hot, which matters when the next espresso machine is a district away. The larder side sells takeaway and catering, so it is a practical stop before a day on the Glenelg River.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Henty Street, Casterton's main commercial strip in Victoria's south-west, about 70 kilometres south of Hamilton. Street parking along Henty Street is easy even on market mornings, and the flat town blocks suit a leg-stretch walk before you order.

Close by with the dogs
