Island Park Reserve

In Casterton, the birthplace of the Australian Kelpie, the tracks through Island Park Reserve loop past Ess Lagoon and along the Glenelg River. The route is best known as the Kelpie Trail Loop, and dogs are welcome on lead.

Lead rules

Glenelg Shire Council manages the reserve. Dogs can walk here on a lead and under effective control, and must stay out of prohibited areas such as playgrounds.

The walk

The loop is flat and easy on older joints, on dirt, gravel and natural earth tracks. Ess Lagoon is still water busy with birdlife, and giant river red gums line the banks of the Glenelg.

There is free parking near Island Park and the Australian Kelpie Centre, with bins around the reserve and picnic areas.

Water and shade

The red gums give plenty of shade along the river. The river and lagoon sit right beside the path, but drinking taps are limited, so carry water and a bowl.

Make a day of it

Back in town, Element Cafe & Larder is the spot for a coffee.

When to go

Flat and shaded, this suits dogs of any age and pace. Kelpie owners get the bonus of walking the breed's home town.
