606 Laneway Coffee

606 Laneway Coffee is a small specialty coffee stop down the laneway behind the 606 Balcombe Road building in Black Rock, about 150 metres from the beach. It is built for mornings: the shutters go up just after 6am, and trading wraps up by early afternoon, with days and closing times that shift week to week, so check the website before you detour. For a dog walker along the Bayside foreshore, it is a natural mid-walk halt.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the open-air laneway seating, which sits on paving as a shared through-space, so keep the lead on while you wait and drink. Water bowls are available, though a backup of your own is sensible in summer. The layout suits a quick coffee with a settled dog rather than a long sit-down, and takeaway keeps the beach leg of the walk on schedule.

The vibe

The focus is narrow and well done: specialty coffee that early feedback rates among the better cups in Black Rock, plus quality pastries and a small run of gluten-free and vegan sweets such as cookies, slices and muffins. Early feedback from locals has been strong.

Getting there and parking

Access is via the laneway behind the 606 Balcombe Road building. Free street parking runs along Balcombe Road and side streets including Bluff Road, and Black Rock village is walkable on-lead if you are coming from the shops.

Close by with the dogs

The Black Rock Beach Dog Off Leash Area allows off-lead swimming at any hour through the winter months, with early-morning off-lead windows in summer that line up neatly with the cafe's opening. The Half Moon Bay Beach Off Leash Area is a little further along the coast. For another local brew, The Colonel's Son is in the village, and more dog friendly cafes are listed across VIC and in Black Rock.
