Swalk Cafe

Swalk Cafe at 129 Lancaster Road, Ascot is a neighbourhood breakfast spot with a feature very few Brisbane cafes can match: a small fenced dog area at the back of the outdoor seating, so your dog can potter about off-lead while you eat a few metres away. The name comes from the old postal acronym for sealed with a loving kiss, which sets the tone.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome throughout the alfresco area, with water bowls provided and staff known for making a fuss of regulars' dogs. The fenced patch sits at the rear of the outdoor seating with tables right alongside it, which takes the pressure off dogs that will not settle under a table. Claim a fence-side table and everyone wins. Indoors stays people-only.

On the plate

The coffee draws consistent praise, and the bacon and egg rolls, brekkie wraps and avo smash are the crowd favourites. It opens seven days from early morning, Monday to Friday from 6am, and you can order ahead by SMS if you want a takeaway timed to a walk. Weekend service runs to midday, with Sunday winding up even earlier, so it is a morning operation in every sense.

Getting there and parking

Street parking on Lancaster Road is limited at peak breakfast times, so use the surrounding side streets if the front bays are taken. It is an easy drive from Hamilton and Clayfield, and the Racecourse Road strip is close by.

While you are out there

Ascot Park Fenced Dog Park is close by for a longer run, Vito's Cucina & Bar on Nudgee Road is the Italian alternative for lunch, and the Bayswater and Ascot river trails make a good walk to attach to breakfast.
