Ventnor Dog Beach

Ventnor Dog Beach is the off-leash stretch of sand between Ventnor Beach Road and Graydens Road on the western side of Phillip Island, looking out towards the Mornington Peninsula. It is a quiet, natural bay beach with calm shallow water, and unlike the busier Cowes and Rhyll beaches, it runs off-leash year-round.

The rules. Dogs can run off-leash at all times on the section between Ventnor Beach Road and Graydens Road. Adjacent stretches, especially near signed nesting areas, require a leash, so know where the boundary sits before you let your dog off. Effective voice control applies throughout: keep your dog in sight and carry a leash even in the off-leash zone. Stay at least 50 metres from any signed wildlife refuge. Other Phillip Island beaches (not this one) ban dogs during summer daytime hours (1 December to 30 April, 10am-5pm), so this stretch is a reliable fallback if you are island-hopping in peak season.

What's there. This is a natural, low-infrastructure beach. There is a rubbish bin at the main access point, but no dog wash, no water tap and no shade structures, so bring your own water bowl and poo bags. Access tracks run off the end of Ventnor Beach Road.

Getting there. From Melbourne, take the M1 to Koo Wee Rup, then the A420 onto Phillip Island, following signs toward Cowes-Rhyll Road before turning onto Ventnor Road. Parking is street-side along Ventnor Beach Road and the surrounding residential streets and is limited, so arrive early on weekends. There is no direct public transport to the beach, so a car is the practical option.

Nearby with the dogs. The Store, Ventnor is a dog-friendly local cafe open 7am-3pm, an easy stop before or after the beach. In Cowes, Bani's Greek and Hotel Phillip Island both offer dog-friendly outdoor dining. For a night or two, Anchorage Cottage and Seahaven Views are pet-friendly rentals in Ventnor itself, and Verandah Retreat in Cowes has a fenced yard.

Go early morning or after 5pm in summer to have the sand largely to yourself, and check tides beforehand if you want maximum space to run. Regulations can change, so confirm current signage on arrival.
