Ventnor Dog Beach

Ventnor Dog Beach is the off-lead stretch of sand between Ventnor Beach Road and Graydens Road on the western side of Phillip Island, looking out towards the Mornington Peninsula. It is a quiet, natural bay beach with calm shallow water, and unlike the busier Cowes and Rhyll beaches it runs off lead year round.

The rules

Dogs can run off lead at all times on the section between Ventnor Beach Road and Graydens Road, a designation from Bass Coast Shire Council with no hourly restrictions. Adjacent stretches, especially towards Silverleaves, are on lead or carry seasonal bans, so know where the boundary sits before unclipping.

Effective voice control applies throughout, and if your dog comes within 50 metres of a signed threatened species wildlife refuge it must be back on a lead immediately. Carry a leash even in the off-lead zone and check the signs at each access point, as boundaries can change.

Pepsi: shallow, calm water like this is ideal for a paddle rather than a big swim, and low tide opens up the most sand for a proper run.

The water

Western Port water is generally calm and shallow here, which suits nervous swimmers and puppies as much as confident water dogs. Low tide opens the most sand for running, and the bay stays usable through the tide cycle, though dry sand narrows in places.

What's there

This is a low-infrastructure beach: a bin at the main access point and little else. There is no dog wash, no water tap and no shade structures, so bring your own water, bowl and poo bags. Access tracks run off the end of Ventnor Beach Road.

Getting there

From Melbourne take the M1 to Koo Wee Rup, then the A420 onto Phillip Island and follow signs to Ventnor Road. Parking is street side along Ventnor Beach Road and surrounding residential streets, and it is limited, so arrive early on summer weekends. There is no direct public transport, so a car is the practical option.

Watch-outs

The boundary drift is the main one: dog rules tighten sharply outside the signed stretch, and rangers do patrol in peak season. Give any signed wildlife refuge a wide berth, pack out your bags, and keep dogs clear of the boat ramp activity near the main beach end.

When to go

Early morning and late afternoon are the quiet windows, and the beach stays a reliable option in peak season when much of the rest of the island restricts dogs during summer daytime hours.
