Toogoom 01 Beach Access

Toogoom 01 is a foreshore access point near the Shellcot Street end of Toogoom, at the start of the suburb's 24-hour off-leash beach. It is a calm, scenic stretch about 15 to 20 minutes north of Hervey Bay, with wide sand flats at low tide and a long run of coastline that makes it a favourite with local dog walkers.

Leash status

The designated 24-hour off-leash zone runs from the pathway between 54 and 56 Shellcot Street through to Ries Road, and this access point sits at that end, so dogs can be off-leash here around the clock. Fraser Coast Regional Council still expects effective control: your dog needs to return promptly on command, not pester other beachgoers, and waste goes in the bins provided.

Outside the marked zone, including neighbouring streets and the Craignish foreshore towards Ries Road, dogs must be on a leash between 8am and 3pm, with off-leash hours applying outside those times. Read the on-site signage before unclipping, as boundaries are periodically reviewed.

Water and terrain

The tide runs a long way out here. Mid to low tide opens broad, firm sand flats ideal for running and fetch, while high tide covers most of the sand and narrows the walk to the upper beach. Watch the incoming tide so you are not caught out on the flats, and keep dogs away from any shorebird closure signs.

Getting there and parking

Follow the Esplanade north from Hervey Bay towards Toogoom and turn towards Shellcot Street. Street parking near the access points is limited and public transport is thin, so driving is the practical option. A small water bowl on a pedestal sits near the sandy entrance path, and the coastal tree line gives some natural shade.

Worth knowing

This is an open, unfenced natural beach, so voice control matters more than it does at a fenced park. Bring your own bags, as stock levels at the dispenser are not guaranteed, and there are no toilets at the access point itself.

When to go

Early morning and late afternoon are the quietest windows and the most comfortable for dogs in the Queensland heat. Aim for a mid to low tide for maximum running room, and expect more company on weekends and school holidays.

While you're out there

Salty at Toogoom welcomes dogs in its garden for a post-swim coffee, and the same stretch of foreshore continues through the other Toogoom beach access points if you want to walk the full off-leash run.
