Toogoom 01 sits on the Toogoom foreshore near the Shellcot Street end, the start of the suburb's 24-hour off-leash beach. It is a tranquil, scenic stretch with wide sand flats at low tide and a long run of coastline for walking and socialising, well away from the Hervey Bay crowds.

The rules. The designated 24-hour off-leash zone runs from the pathway between 54 and 56 Shellcot Street through to Ries Road, and this access sits at that end. Dogs can be off-leash here around the clock but must stay under effective control and return promptly on command. Outside the marked zone, in neighbouring streets and beach sections, dogs must be on a leash. Boundaries and seasonal shorebird zones on the Fraser Coast are being updated, so read the on-site signage before letting go of the lead.

The water and sand. The tide runs a long way out here, opening up broad sand flats at mid to low tide, then covers most of the sand at high tide. Mid to low tide gives the most room. Keep an eye on the incoming tide so you are not caught out on the flats.

What's there. Clear signage marks the start and end of the off-leash area, and there is a small water bowl on a pedestal near the sandy entrance path. The dune line of coastal trees gives some natural shade. It is an open, unfenced natural beach.

Getting there. Roughly 15 to 20 minutes north of Hervey Bay, following the Esplanade towards Shellcot Street. Street parking near the access points is limited. Public transport options are thin, so driving is easiest.

Nearby with the dogs. Goody's On The Beach (54 Moreton Street) is a highly rated dog-friendly spot with a deck over the inlet and water bowls, and Salty at Toogoom (67 Moreton Street) welcomes dogs in its garden. Several Toogoom holiday rentals take pets.

When to go. Early morning or late afternoon for the quietest run, on a mid to low tide. Bring your own water for warm days. Good for sociable dogs that like room to roam.
