Off Lead Dog Beach

Seventeen Seventy and Agnes Water offer two linked off-leash zones on the Discovery Coast: the open SES grounds at Round Hill Road, and a designated stretch of main beach north of the Surf Club Avenue access point. Between them you get hard-running space, sand, and surf, governed by Gladstone Regional Council's animal management local law.

The rules. Both sites are off-leash, but your dog must be under effective voice control at all times. On Agnes Water Main Beach, the off-leash zone begins north of the Surf Club Avenue beach access (Marker SS1). Dogs are prohibited from the patrolled, flagged bathing area. Chinaman's Beach operates on a seasonal off-leash window: April through October only, closing entirely November to March for turtle nesting season. The SES grounds may also face restrictions during bird nesting periods, so check current notices before you travel. Owners must carry waste bags and clean up; disposal bins are usually provided on site.

The terrain. Low tide is the window that matters. It exposes more sand and gives dogs proper room to run. High tide compresses the usable beach significantly, so check tide times for the Agnes Water stretch before committing. The SES grounds are open and flat, better suited to ball and stick work than the narrow beach corridor.

What's there. Parking is available at the SES grounds, with some natural shade. Main beach access is via the paths from Captain Cook Drive. There are no dedicated dog-wash facilities at either site and no guaranteed tap water, so bring your own supply for after-swim rinsing and drinking.

Watch-outs. Turtle nesting closures at Chinaman's Beach are firm and enforced. Flagged swimming areas at Agnes Water are strictly off-limits to dogs. Bird nesting restrictions at the SES grounds are not tied to fixed dates in council material, so verify locally if you are travelling in spring.

Early morning and late afternoon suit both spots: cooler sand, thinner crowds, and better ground for sustained running. Check the tide chart the night before and plan your main beach session around the low. Pack your own water, waste bags, and a shade option, and you will not need anything else.
