Seventeen Seventy Off-Leash Dog Beach

The off-leash beach setup on the Discovery Coast centres on the SES grounds at Seventeen Seventy and a stretch of Agnes Water Main Beach, both run under Gladstone Regional Council's animal management local law. Between the two you get open running space on grass and a proper surf beach, which is a rare pairing on a coast this busy with swimmers and boardriders.

Leash status

Both zones are off-leash, but dogs must stay under effective voice control the whole time. On Agnes Water Main Beach, the off-leash stretch begins north of the Surf Club Avenue access point, marked by timber post SS1, and the patrolled, flagged bathing area is strictly no dogs. Keep the lead on for the access paths down to the permitted zone. Chinaman's Beach runs a seasonal off-leash window from April to October and closes entirely to dogs from November to March for turtle nesting season, and the SES grounds can face temporary restrictions during bird nesting periods, so check council notices if you are travelling in spring.

Water and terrain

Tide is the variable that matters here. Low tide opens a wide, hard-packed run along the main beach, while high tide compresses the usable sand into a narrow corridor. The SES grounds are flat and open, better suited to ball work and sustained running when the beach is squeezed. The surf side is a proper ocean beach rather than a bay, so expect waves rather than flat paddling water.

Max: plan the main beach session around a falling tide and you double the running room. If the tide is high or the wind is up, the SES grounds are the fallback.

Getting there and parking

The SES grounds sit off Captain Cook Drive in Seventeen Seventy with parking on site and some natural shade. Main beach access is via paths from Captain Cook Drive on the Agnes Water side. Facilities are thin at both: no dog-wash points and no guaranteed tap water, so carry drinking water, waste bags and whatever you need for rinsing off salty dogs before the car trip.

Worth knowing

The turtle nesting closures are enforced, not advisory, so do not treat a November to March visit to Chinaman's Beach as a grey area. Springs Beach, a quieter coastal spot nearby, is on-lead rather than off-leash. Between swim sessions, check the sand temperature before midday runs in summer; the early and late windows are cooler for dogs in a coat.

When to go

Early morning and late afternoon suit both spots: cooler sand, thinner crowds and better ground for sustained running. Check the tide chart the night before and build the day around the low. Weekdays outside school holidays are the quietest on the beach stretch itself.
