Dog Beach

Dog Beach in Tannum Sands is a designated off-leash stretch of coastline near The Oaks Road, where soft sand and tidal flats give dogs room to run and swim. The single reason to make the trip is the low-tide window, when the receding water leaves a wide expanse of firm sand that turns the beach into a proper running track.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted only within the designated area near The Oaks Road, north of the main surf club. Dogs are excluded from the Tannum Sands bathing reserve to the south, so check signage before unclipping. Dogs must remain under effective voice control at all times. You must carry poop bags and clean up immediately, with fines for failing to remove pet waste.

The water and terrain. This is a tidal beach with soft sand above the waterline and hard-packed sand exposed at low tide. When the tide drops, you get a broad, firm running surface. At high tide, the usable beach shrinks significantly, so timing matters more than anything else.

What is there. Dog waste bags and bins are provided at major access points including The Oaks Road entry. A sandy path leads directly to the water from the car park.

Getting there. From Gladstone, take the Gladstone-Benaraby Road and turn onto Tannum Sands Road, then follow signs for The Oaks Road and beach access. Parking is available along The Oaks Road and in beach parking spots, though spaces are limited. A bus service connects Gladstone and Tannum Sands but runs infrequently.

Watch-outs. Seasonal turtle nesting occurs in the region, particularly on Wild Cattle Island Beach to the north. Keep dogs well clear of dunes and nesting areas, and obey any seasonal signage.

Nearby with the dogs. For a quieter stretch of sand, head to Second Beach. If you need a coffee and a water bowl, Junction Cafe on Hampton Dr is noted as dog-friendly with water bowls and treats. For an overnight stay, Reef Adventureland Motel on Hampton Dr is listed as pet-friendly.

Target a mid-week morning on a falling tide for the widest sand and the thinnest crowds. Avoid Saturday and Sunday between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM unless you want the social scene. Check the tide chart the night before and plan your arrival around it.
