Second Beach

Second Beach is the quieter, northern stretch of Tannum Sands, running towards Canoe Point and the Boyne River mouth. It is a natural, sandy beach that draws dog owners for its off-leash access and a more secluded feel than the patrolled Main Beach.

The rules. Dogs are generally allowed off-leash across the sandy stretch heading towards Canoe Point and the river mouth, but they must be under effective voice control at all times. Leashes are required on the walkways, in car parks and on the main patrolled beach. Signage marks the zones and can change during sensitive environmental periods, so check it on arrival. Pick up after your dog and use the provided bins. Nearby coastal areas towards Wild Cattle Creek may carry their own restrictions.

The water and sand. Swimming is best around mid-to-high tide. At low tide the water pulls back to expose a very wide, shallow sand flat, which is fine for a wander but less good for a proper swim. Natural shade along the boundary varies by spot, so pick your patch.

What is there. This is a natural, un-patrolled beach with minimal facilities. Access is via sandy paths from surrounding residential streets, such as near The Oaks Road, with small parking areas nearby, including around Cashin Park.

Getting there. Drive in from the town centre via Hampton Drive or The Oaks Road, or walk in along the coastal path network from the Canoe Point area. Local buses serve the broader area, but driving or walking is the realistic way to reach the sandy access points.

Nearby with the dogs. Blend Cafe and Junction Cafe, both on Hampton Drive, welcome dogs at their outdoor tables. For an overnight, Discovery Parks - Tannum Sands and a few local motels take dogs in selected rooms or sites.

Go early morning or late afternoon to skip the heat and the weekend crowds around the residential access points, and time a swim for the incoming tide. Good for dogs that recall well and like a long, open run.
