Rushcutters Bay Park

Rushcutters Bay Park is a flat harbourside park between Rushcutters Bay and New South Head Road, next door to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, with wide lawns under Moreton Bay figs and a foreshore path along the water. It is one of the eastern suburbs' busiest off-leash spots thanks to generous hours and a proper morning-and-evening dog crowd, though be clear-eyed about the water: this is a harbour edge with seawall and boardwalk rather than a sandy swimming beach.

Leash status

Off-leash hours run from 3:30pm to 10:30am daily, with dogs on-lead from 10:30am to 3:30pm. Even off-lead, dogs must be under effective control the whole time, and the off-leash freedom is suspended whenever organised sport is underway on the fields. Dogs are never permitted in the children's playground or on the sports ovals in use. Bring your own waste bags as a backup, because the dispensers are not always stocked.

Water and terrain

The park is flat lawn shaded by big figs, and the harbourside path runs along the bay where dogs can paddle at the water's edge in spots. It is not a dog beach in the sand-and-surf sense; swimming space is limited and the path narrows near high tide, so passing another dog can get awkward. Keep a shorter lead through the tight stretch if your dog is reactive. Drinking fountains with water bowls sit near the playground and along the main path, and public toilets are on site.

Getting there and parking

The park sits at 14A Waratah Street, Rushcutters Bay. Street parking on Waratah Street, New South Head Road and the surrounding Darling Point streets is ticketed and time-limited, and it is unreliable on weekends. Edgecliff Station is a five to ten minute walk down the hill, and buses run constantly along New South Head Road, so public transport beats driving here.

Worth knowing

This is a social scene as much as a park. The regulars arrive in waves before work and after dinner, the main path is lit for evening walks, and mature trees hold shade through summer. Weekend mid-mornings in the on-lead window are calm if you want a quieter lap; the off-lead hours are where the energy is.

When to go

Early morning from about 7am and the block after 4pm once the off-leash window opens are the best times. Weekends draw the biggest crowds through both windows, so arrive early if your dog needs room. If the park is packed, neighbouring Beare Park at Elizabeth Bay makes a calmer harbourside alternative.

While you're out there

Scramble And Bean sits right on the park's edge beside the tennis courts with outdoor seating and a genuinely dog-friendly setup, making it the obvious coffee stop. For an overnight, Hotel Indigo Sydney Potts Point is within walking distance.
