Rushcutters Bay Park

Rushcutters Bay Park is a flat, harbourside green space between Rushcutters Bay and New South Head Road, right next to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, and it is one of the eastern suburbs' most popular off-leash spots thanks to generous hours and a genuine social scene morning and evening.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted from 3:30pm to 10:30am, with on-leash required from 10:30am to 3:30pm. Dogs must stay off-leash only when there is no organised sport underway on the fields, and they are not permitted in the children's playground at any time. Council requires effective control at all times, even off-leash.

What's there. Drinking fountains with water bowls sit near the playground and along the main path, and public toilets are on site. Mature trees give solid shade through summer, and the main path is lit for evening walks. Bring your own waste bags as a backup since dispensers are not always stocked.

Getting there. The park sits at 14A Waratah St, Rushcutters Bay. Street parking on Waratah Street, New South Head Road and the surrounding Darling Point streets is ticketed and time-limited, so it is not a guaranteed spot on weekends. Edgecliff Station is a five to ten minute walk down the hill, and buses run frequently along New South Head Road.

Nearby with the dogs. Scramble And Bean sits right on the park's edge next to the tennis courts, with outdoor seating and a genuinely dog-friendly setup. Several pet-friendly apartment stays and hotels, including Hotel Indigo Sydney Potts Point, are within walking distance. If the park is packed, neighbouring Yarranabbe Park is a calmer alternative harbourside walk.

Weekend mornings from 9am to 10:30am and weekday evenings from 4:30pm to 6pm are the busiest windows. Weekday mornings before 8am are the quiet option if you want the path to yourself. Go for the long off-leash hours either side of the working day, and confirm the sport calendar if you are planning a midday visit.
