Jan Juc Dog Beach

Jan Juc Dog Beach is a rugged, cliff-backed stretch of Surf Coast sand where the off-leash windows shift with the seasons. Outside the summer peak, dogs can run off-leash at all times under effective control, which makes it one of the more generous coastal drives within ninety minutes of Melbourne.

Off-lead windows

Surf Coast Shire runs this as a seasonal timeshare beach, and the split is strict. During the summer peak, from 1 December to the end of February plus the Easter long weekend, dogs are banned from the sand between 9am and 7pm and allowed off-leash under effective control from 7pm to 9am.

Outside that peak period, off-leash applies at all times. Effective control means your dog returns immediately when called; if recall is not reliable, the lead goes back on. One buffer applies year-round: dogs must be leashed within 50 metres of lifesaver patrol flags, and there is a permanent dog-prohibited zone around Point Danger to the north.

Max: strong surf deserves respect. If your recall is not rock-solid under distraction, the leash buffer near the patrol flags is where you want to be anyway.

Water and terrain

The beach is sandy with rocky patches, backed by cliffs and exposed to genuine Surf Coast swell, so assess your dog's confidence around waves before letting it loose near the break. Time the visit around low tide if you can; at high water the sand narrows considerably and pushes everyone closer to the cliff-side pathways.

There are no dog water stations on the sand, so pack water and a bowl in the car. Bins sit near the main access points and the clifftop paths above the beach make a good on-lead warm-up.

Getting there and parking

Allow about an hour and a half from Melbourne via the M1 and Surf Coast Highway, turning off towards Torquay and Jan Juc. The large car park sits at the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club at the end of Jan Juc Road, with beach access paths running down from it.

The coastal walk from Jan Juc Beach to Bells Beach adds a clifftop leg to the day, and the Surf Coast Walk towards Bird Rock extends it further. For a coffee afterwards, Bayaroma Cafe in Torquay takes dogs at its outdoor tables.
