Surf Coast Walk: Point Danger to Bird Rock

The Surf Coast Walk between Point Danger and Bird Rock runs 3.2 km one way along the Torquay and Jan Juc coastline, with open ocean views and a look at the Bells Beach surf breaks as you go. Allow 40 minutes to an hour each way. It is one of the best clifftop walks on the Surf Coast, but the dog rules have real teeth here, and one of them catches people out at the very start.

Leash status

Dogs on lead are allowed on the walking track itself, and leads stay on for all shared trails, access paths and car parks. But dogs are prohibited outright at Point Danger, the trail's Torquay end, which means you cannot do this walk end to end with a dog even on lead. Start from an access point past Point Danger instead. Below the track, beach zoning varies by marker: Bird Rock at the other end bans dogs between 9am and 7pm from 1 December to the end of February and over Easter, and fenced dune and coastal vegetation areas are off limits everywhere along the route. The City of Greater Geelong and Barwon Coast manage the area, and seasonal hooded plover restrictions apply over summer, so read the signage at whatever access point you use.

Water and terrain

The path is mostly flat and well formed, a mix of concrete and gravel with sandy stretches along the cliff tops. It rates moderate for the exposed clifftop sections rather than any real climbing, and those sections carry steep drops, so a short lead is sensible there regardless. Drinking fountains sit at points including Fishermans Beach and near the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club, public toilets are at Torquay Front Beach, Fishermans Beach and near Jan Juc Beach, and bag dispensers are placed at key trailheads and beach access points.

Getting there and parking

Free parking runs along The Esplanade near Torquay's Point Danger end and near the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club at the Bird Rock end. With a dog, skip the Point Danger car park and start closer to Jan Juc or Fishermans Beach. V/Line buses from Geelong stop in central Torquay, a short walk from the northern trail sections.

When to go

Go early morning outside the December to February and Easter restriction windows for the calmest walk and coolest conditions. The track suits steady walkers after sea views without a hard climb, and there-and-back from a dog-legal access point gives you a solid 5 to 6 km outing.

Max: Check which end bans dogs before you park. Turning up at Point Danger with a dog still means no entry, so start from a different access point if you have one with you.

While you're out there

The walk continues from Bird Rock towards Bells Beach on the Jan Juc Beach to Bells Beach trail. Afterwards, Sandbah Cafe in Torquay is an easy coffee stop, and The Sands Torquay makes a solid dog-friendly base if you are staying overnight.
