Bellambi Beach

Bellambi Beach sits between Corrimal and Woonona on the Illawarra coast, a quieter stretch of sand than the beaches closer to Wollongong, with a marked off-leash zone and a dog-friendly food truck right at the beach access. It works for a quick morning swim or a longer run along the sand towards Bellambi Point.

Leash status

Wollongong City Council runs a zone system across its beaches and part of Bellambi Beach sits in the green, off-leash-at-all-times category, towards the northern end near the Bellambi Point and East Corrimal side. Other sections are time-shared or off-limits to dogs, so the boundary you cross matters. Check the signage where you come onto the sand, whether that is from Pembroke Mews, Armour Street or the surf club end, before you unclip.

Wherever dogs are allowed, they need to be under effective control, and the lead goes back on near the surf club, picnic areas, pathways and the car park. Carry your own bags even though dispensers sit near the main entrances, because they are not always stocked.

Water and terrain

This is an open ocean beach, so conditions shift with swell and wind more than at the sheltered water around the point. Low to mid tide opens the widest strip of sand for a proper run; at high tide the water pushes up to the soft sand near the dunes and the usable beach narrows. Council water stations sit near the main access points, but bring extra in summer.

Max: the green zone is a specific stretch, not the whole beach. Walk past a sign and you can be on sand where dogs are banned, and rangers do come through.

Getting there and parking

Free parking is available off Bellambi Lane near the surf club, a short walk from the main access points. Bellambi Station is about 15 to 20 minutes on foot if you would rather leave the car, and Premier Illawarra buses run along the highway a short walk from the sand.

Worth knowing

Saltie Dog, a coffee and crepes food truck parked by the beach access, is popular with dog owners and worth timing a visit around. If you are staying over, Southview Boutique Guesthouse in Bulli takes dogs, and Corrimal Beach Tourist Park has some pet-friendly sites too.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the quiet window; weekends build from around 8 to 11am through summer. Low to mid tide gives the most room. It suits dogs that prefer space over crowds.

While you're out there

The Little Austinmer Beach off-leash stretch is a few minutes south, and Bellambi Olives is a dog-friendly coffee stop close to the sand. Southview Boutique Guesthouse makes an easy overnight base for a dog beach weekend.
