Petaluma Wine

Petaluma's Woodside cellar door is a converted farmstead in the Adelaide Hills at 254 Pfeiffer Road, about 40 to 50 minutes from Adelaide, with expansive lawns, a deck under big yellow umbrellas and views running out over the vines. It is one of the Hills' genuinely dog-friendly cellar doors: dogs are welcome on the deck and lawns, and well-behaved dogs are allowed inside the cellar door itself, where staff are known to set out cushy beds for visiting hounds.

The dog setup

Leashed dogs are welcome across the lawns and deck, and indoors when the cellar door is quiet. Ask staff for a water bowl; they are generally happy to oblige. Keep dogs on lead around the grounds, since it is a working cellar door with other visitors and children about, and reserve a spot ahead if you want a guaranteed deck table on a weekend. Groups larger than eight should contact the cellar door in advance.

The vibe

This is premium cool-climate country: chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz, Croser sparkling, and structured wine flights alongside generous regional platters of local cheese, cured meats and fruit, built for sharing between two or three people. Chocolate and wine pairings appear too. It trades daily from 11am to 4:30pm, closing on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday. Weekdays mean room on the deck and a better shot at a quiet indoor spot; weekends and long weekends fill the lawns fast.
