Dal Zotto Wines is the family winery that first planted prosecco in Australia back in 1999, on the Wangaratta-Whitfield Road in the King Valley. Alongside the cellar door there's an onsite trattoria doing pizza and lunch with vineyard views, and dogs are genuinely part of the setup outdoors.

The dog setup. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome in the outdoor lawn and courtyard areas, including while you eat at the trattoria. The courtyard is covered and heated, so it stays comfortable with a dog in cooler weather too. Staff are often happy to bring out a water bowl, but pack your own just in case.

Known for. Being Australia's prosecco pioneers, plus a broader range of Italian varietals like barbera, sangiovese and pinot grigio, and casual trattoria lunches with a view over the vines.

Getting there and parking. The winery is at 4861 Wangaratta-Whitfield Rd, Whitfield, about 45 minutes from Wangaratta or 3 hours from Melbourne. Parking is free and onsite on gravel.

Nearby with the dogs. Whitfield Picnic Area is a short drive away for a scenic stretch of the legs, and Lake William Hovell further up the road is worth the detour for on-leash walking and scenery.

the heated courtyard makes this a good pick even on a cooler King Valley day.

Go for a leisurely lunch on a mild day and settle into the courtyard rather than rushing the tasting.
