King River Estate Wines sits on the banks of the King River at 3556 Wangaratta-Whitfield Road in Edi, a relaxed boutique cellar door in the King Valley about two and a half hours from Melbourne. For dog owners the appeal is simple: an open lawn setting right by the river, where a well-behaved dog on a lead is part of the afternoon while you work through old-world styles and a plate of homemade dumplings.

Dogs on a lead are welcome across the outdoor vineyard areas, including the tasting lawn and the undercover marquee spaces, which keeps things workable in summer sun or a cool snap. The formal indoor tasting room is generally kept for people, so plan on a lawn table. Keep the lead on at all times out of consideration for other guests and the local wildlife, and bring a water bowl as a fallback even though one is often provided. Well-behaved dogs on leads are also welcome during ticketed events, so the music days do not have to mean leaving the dog at home.

Worth knowing

The estate was named Best Small Cellar Door by Gourmet Traveller Wine in 2022 and pours both its namesake label and the Flying Duck range, leaning on French, Italian and Georgian styles from sparkling through to robust reds. Food runs to woodfired pizzas, dumplings, arancini and cheese platters, mostly around event days. Doors open 11am to 5pm on Fridays through Mondays, closed midweek. Live music lands on long weekends and sunny Saturday afternoons, and entry is usually free, though booking a table is smart on event weekends. Groups of eight or more need to arrange a booking ahead.

Getting there and parking

The Wangaratta-Whitfield Road runs up the King Valley from Wangaratta; the estate is signposted at Edi, roughly half an hour out of town, with free on-site parking.
