Stanton and Killeen is a seventh-generation winery on Jacks Road in Wahgunyah, in the heart of the Rutherglen wine region. It is a relaxed, openly dog-friendly cellar door with a generous lawned area and shade trees, which makes it one of the easier stops to settle a dog while you taste.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome on a lead in the outdoor areas, including the lawn and covered patio, and can stay with you for a tasting out there. Keep them leashed given the open lawn. There is no fee for bringing your dog, and water bowls are provided.

Known for. High-quality Portuguese varieties, big Rutherglen reds and traditional barrel-aged fortifieds. Regional grazing platters are available for a picnic on the lawn, and the winery has been known to run a doggy-themed event around March, worth checking their calendar if that appeals.

Getting there and parking. The cellar door is at 440 Jacks Road, Wahgunyah, easily reached by car with on-site parking.

Nearby with the dogs. Several neighbouring wineries also welcome dogs outdoors, and Rutherglen's main street has cafes with outdoor seating a short drive away. Pair a platter here with a stroll along the nearby rail trail.

Big lawn, shade and a platter to share crumbs from. Grab a spot under the trees on a warm day and settle in for the afternoon.

Best on a fine, unhurried day when the lawn is the main event. Bring your own bowl as backup. Good for sociable dogs that enjoy room to relax.
