Wombat Crossing at 304 Hermitage Road is a small, family-owned boutique vineyard that openly welcomes dogs inside the cellar door as well as out on the grounds. The room is air-conditioned and has an open fire in winter, so it works as a year-round stop with a dog.

Where the dog goes. Dogs are welcome inside the air-conditioned cellar door and out walking the vineyard and grounds. Keep yours well-behaved, on a lead and under control on the property. Water bowls are often provided.

What is there. Handmade wines, many crafted by acclaimed local winemaker Andrew Thomas, across Semillon, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Shiraz and Cabernet/Merlot blends. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with a cosy open fire drawing people in over winter.

Getting there. 304 Hermitage Road, easy to reach on the Hermitage Road trail and usually marked by a clear Wombat Crossing sign. On-site parking is available.

When to go. The fireside is the winter draw and the air-conditioned room the summer one, so this stop holds up in either extreme. Weekdays are quieter for a small, calm room.
