Ivanhoe Wines at 525 Marrowbone Road is a family-run vineyard, owned by Stephen and Tracy Drayton since 1996, with a relaxed cellar door looking over the vines to the Brokenback Range. It is one of the Pokolbin doors that lets leashed dogs right inside, not just on the deck, which makes it an easy all-weather stop with a dog.

Where the dog goes. Dogs are welcome on the covered verandah and in the outdoor areas, and they are also permitted inside the cellar door on a lead. Water bowls are kept on-site, so the dog is looked after wherever you settle. The verandah is the pick for the view.

The rules. Lead on at all times and keep the dog well-behaved. Indoor access is a privilege that depends on a calm dog, so a fidgety one is happier out on the verandah. Staff are friendly to visiting dogs.

What is there. Ivanhoe is known for gutsy Hunter reds and Semillon, poured in a friendly, unhurried tasting. Kids are catered for too, with colouring books and games, so it works for a mixed group.

Getting there. 525 Marrowbone Road, with ample free parking right at the cellar door.

Inside, on the verandah, or out on the grass, the dog is welcome and there is a water bowl waiting. Hard to beat.

When to go. The verandah view is best in clear afternoon light. Marrowbone Road is quieter than the main spines, so it stays relaxed even on weekends.
