Mount Bright via Watagan Track

Mount Bright via the Watagan Track is an 8 km out-and-back climb through Pokolbin State Forest, on the edge of Hunter Valley wine country above Mount View. The deciding fact for dog owners: dogs are allowed on lead here, unlike the neighbouring Watagans and Werakata national parks, which ban dogs outright. If you want a real climb in the Hunter with your dog beside you, this is the track that permits it.

Leash status

This is Forestry Corporation of NSW land, and unlike national parks, NSW state forests do permit dogs. The rule on this track is lead on for the entire way. Part of the route skirts private property, so stick to the fence line rather than cutting corners off the track. Pick up after your dog, and take particular care near the farmland sections where livestock graze.

The climb

It is an out-and-back of roughly 8 km taking 2.5 to 3 hours at a moderate to challenging grade. The first stretch is a steep ascent, so the warm-up is real and dogs that are not conditioned to hills will feel it. Underfoot is forest track, uneven in places but generally clear, and the payoff is a panoramic lookout over the valley's vineyards, farmland and bushland. The lookout itself is warm and exposed, so there is no incentive to hurry the top section.

Max: Watch for cows or horses along the fence-line stretches. Keep the lead short and give livestock a wide, calm berth, because a startled animal and a dog on a long line is how these walks go wrong.

Water and terrain

There is no water anywhere on the trail or at the trailhead, and no creek or dam along the way for a dog to cool off in, so this is not a swimming walk. Carry enough for both of you, bring a collapsible bowl, and plan breaks in the shade on the way up. The track can turn steep and slippery after rain, and the descent is the part that punishes wet weather, so push the walk back a day or two if it has been raining.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Old Bulga Road onto the Watagan Track, near the signed Biame Cave marker. There is a free grassy parking area at the trailhead with no facilities and no shelter, so arrive prepared. A car is effectively required, with access easiest from Cessnock or Pokolbin, and weekend parking fills early, so aim to be there before mid-morning.

The vineyard below the climb has its own listing: Briar Ridge Vineyard sits in Mount View itself, and the Pokolbin cellar doors are a short drive back down the hill. Audrey Wilkinson and Sobels Winery both make a civilised finish after the descent.

When to go

A dry weekday morning is the pick, when the fence-line stretches are quiet and you have the lookout to yourself. Weekend parking fills early, so arrive before mid-morning if Saturday is your only option. Best for big, fit dogs that want a real climb and an on-lead alternative to the surrounding national parks, and a poor pick in summer heat given the exposure and water situation.
