Mount Bright via the Watagan Track is an 8 km out-and-back climb through Pokolbin State Forest, right on the edge of Hunter Valley wine country near Mount View, NSW. The deciding fact: dogs are allowed on lead here, unlike the neighbouring Watagans and Werakata national parks, which ban dogs outright, so this is the track to pick if you want your dog with you.

The walk. It's an out-and-back of roughly 8 km, taking 2.5 to 3 hours at a moderate to challenging grade. The first stretch is a steep ascent, so expect to warm up fast. Surface is forest track, uneven in places but generally clear. The payoff is a panoramic lookout over the valley's vineyards, farmland and bushland, worth the climb up.

The rules. This is Forestry Corporation of NSW land, and dogs must stay on lead the entire way. Part of the track skirts private property, so stick to the fence line rather than wandering off it. Pick up after your dog, particularly near the farmland sections where livestock graze.

Watch for cows or horses along the fence line stretches. Keep the lead short and give livestock a wide, calm berth, a bolting dog near cattle is a fast way to end a good walk badly.

Water. None on the trail or at the trailhead. Carry enough for both of you, especially given the initial climb, and plan for a warm, exposed lookout at the top.

Hazards. The track can turn steep and slippery after rain, so this one is best saved for dry weather. If it's been wet recently, push the walk back a day or two rather than risk the descent.

There's no creek or dam along the way to cool off in, so this isn't a swimming walk. Bring a collapsible bowl and take breaks in the shade on the way up.

Getting there. Access is via Old Bulga Road onto the Watagan Track, near the signed Biame Cave marker. There's a free grassy parking area at the trailhead, no facilities and no shelter, so come prepared. A car is essentially required, with limited public transport into this part of the forest, and best accessed from Cessnock or Pokolbin. Weekend parking fills early, so aim to arrive before mid-morning.

When to go. Go on a dry weekday morning if you can, when the fence-line stretches are quiet and the lookout is yours. Good for big runners who want a real climb and a leash-friendly alternative to the surrounding national parks.
