What visitors mention
Iron Gate Estate at 168 Thompsons Road is a boutique, Spanish mission-style winery, all tiled cellars and Mediterranean-villa courtyard, tucked off the busier Pokolbin spines. It is one of the warmest welcomes for dogs in the valley, with leashed dogs allowed inside the cellar door as well as out on the terrace, so weather never gates the visit.
Where the dog goes. Well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome inside the tasting room and out on the Spanish-tile courtyard and terrace, which has the views. Staff are known for making a fuss of visiting dogs, so you can pick the spot that suits the day.
The rules. Lead on, dog supervised and settled at all times. Indoor access depends on a calm dog, so an excitable one is better out on the terrace. Bring your own water bowl to be sure.
What is there. The look is the headline, mission-style architecture and tiled cellars, paired with small-batch Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and a knowledgeable, engaging pour. It is intimate rather than sprawling, so it suits a relaxed sit-down tasting.
Getting there. 168 Thompsons Road, with on-site parking out front and flat, easy access to the tasting room and patio.

When to go. Being off the main roads it stays relaxed, but it is small, so a weekday or early slot gives you and the dog the most room. Glandore Estate nearby is a dog-friendly next stop.
