Iron Gate Estate

Iron Gate Estate is a boutique winery in Spanish mission style, all tiled cellars and Mediterranean-villa courtyard, set off the busier Pokolbin spines on Oakey Creek Road. It is one of the warmest dog welcomes in the valley: leashed dogs are allowed inside the tasting room as well as out on the terrace, so weather never gates the visit.

The dog setup

Calm, well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome inside the tasting room, and any dog is welcome across the Spanish-tile courtyard and terrace with its vineyard views. The staff are known for making a fuss of visiting dogs and usually have water bowls out, though bring your own to be sure. Indoor access depends on a settled dog; an excitable one will be happier in the spacious courtyard, and the staff will steer you there kindly.

The vibe

The architecture is the headline, but the tastings hold their own: a seated run through six hand-crafted wines, with chardonnay, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and sparkling among the standouts and a knowledgeable, engaging pour. A working-winery tour runs weekday afternoons, and the on-site Iron Gate Kitchen covers a long Mediterranean lunch. Walk-ins are possible when space allows, but booking is the safe play.

Getting there and parking

The estate sits on Oakey Creek Road, a short turn off the Thompsons Road area, with on-site parking out front and flat, easy access to the tasting room and patio.

When to go

Being off the main roads keeps it relaxed, but the room is small, so a weekday or an early slot gives you and the dog the most room.
