Stanford Merthyr Park Leash Free Area

Stanford Merthyr Park Leash Free Area is a 24-hour off-leash zone on Crown land at 9 Colliery St, about five minutes from Kurri Kurri and 15 from Cessnock. The draw is space: a wide open grass field in a semi-rural pocket of the Hunter, with no time limits on when you can use it.

The dog setup

Off-leash access applies only inside the designated section of the park, and it is not fenced. Cessnock City Council requires dogs to be under effective voice or hand control the whole time, with a lead carried at all times and clipped on the moment you leave the zone. Restricted, dangerous and menacing dogs are not permitted in the off-leash area, and waste has to be picked up, so bring bags because bins are not guaranteed on site.

Because the boundary is open and the surrounding land is bush and farmland with wildlife about, recall matters more here than at a fenced park. If your dog is unreliable off-lead, work close to the Colliery St side and keep sessions short. Water is not a sure thing either, so pack a bowl and a bottle, particularly from late spring through summer.

The vibe

This is a working park rather than a built one. Expect flat grass, big skies and room to run, with minimal seating and shade inside the off-leash area. It suits owners who want an empty field for fetch and recall practice more than a social dog-park scene, and the 24-hour access makes it handy for shift workers and early starters who want to beat the Hunter heat.

Getting there and parking

Take the Kurri Kurri exit off the M15 Hunter Expressway, then follow the signs through to Stanford Merthyr. The address is 9 Colliery St, Stanford Merthyr NSW 2327, with street parking along Colliery St right at the park. Public transport out this way is thin, so plan on driving.

While you're out there

Kurri Kurri and the neighbouring villages have a few dog-friendly stops worth pairing with a session. Little Billy's at Weston is a short drive away, and the Meating Room there serves the same streets. Heading south, the Neath Hotel is a classic small-pub stop that welcomes dogs, and On Poynt Cafe in Thornton works if you are looping back towards Maitland.
