Barnsley Dog Exercise Area

Barnsley Dog Exercise Area sits on Johnson Avenue in the part of Barnsley that Lake Macquarie City Council knows as the Taylor Park off-leash network, an open, unfenced grass reserve that works as a morning run rather than an all-day outing. The off-leash window is tightly limited, so this is a plan-your-morning kind of ground.

The dog setup

Off-leash is permitted only from sunrise until 10am on weekdays under the council's off-leash areas policy; outside that window, and all weekend, dogs must be leashed. The off-leash zone is bounded by Appletree Road, Government Road, Johnson Avenue and the end of Queens Street. Dogs need to stay under effective voice control even when off-leash, waste must be picked up straight away, and dogs should be kept clear of any marked playground or eating area. There is no fencing, minimal shade and limited seating, and water or bag supplies cannot be relied on, so bring your own of both.

Getting there

The reserve is on Johnson Avenue, a short run from the M1 Pacific Motorway and Newcastle Link Road, with free street parking along Johnson Avenue. Local bus stops exist nearby, but a car makes this a much easier visit. The unfenced layout suits confident dogs with reliable recall better than escape artists or nervous small dogs.

Make a day of it

The West Wallsend Dog Exercise Area is the closest similar ground a few minutes away. For a post-walk coffee, Lena's Cafe and Bar on the Warners Bay waterfront keeps outdoor seating where a dog is a welcome guest, about a twenty minute drive around the lake.
