Barnsley Dog Exercise Area sits on Johnson Avenue, known to Lake Macquarie City Council as part of the Taylor Park off-leash network. It is an open, unfenced grass reserve, useful for a morning run rather than an all-day outing, since off-leash hours are tightly limited.
The rules. Off-leash is permitted only from sunrise until 10am on weekdays, under Lake Macquarie City Council's off-leash areas policy. Outside that window, dogs must be leashed. Dogs need to stay under effective voice control even when off-leash, waste must be picked up straight away, and dogs should be kept clear of any marked children's playground or sports field within the reserve.
What's there. This is a simple, open reserve rather than a purpose-built dog park: no fencing, minimal shade, and only limited seating. Bring your own water and waste bags, as supplies on site cannot be relied on.
Getting there. The reserve is on Johnson Avenue, a short run from the M1 Pacific Motorway and Newcastle Link Road. Free street parking is available along Johnson Avenue. Local bus stops exist nearby, but a car makes this a much easier visit.

Nearby with the dogs. West Wallsend, a few minutes' drive away, has a small strip of cafes and bakeries with outdoor seating worth pairing with a morning walk.
Go early on a weekday, ideally before 8am, to get the calmest run of the off-leash window before the 10am cutoff. Being unfenced, it suits confident dogs with reliable recall better than escape artists or nervous small dogs.
