Samuel's Gorge is a small-batch red wine producer in a converted barn on Chaffeys Road, set on a ridge with dramatic views over the Onkaparinga River Gorge. It is one of the more genuinely dog-welcoming cellar doors in McLaren Vale, with a laid-back, rustic feel that suits a relaxed afternoon with the dog.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor decks and seating, and are often allowed inside the rustic cellar door too. Keep your dog on-lead and settled around other patrons, and bear in mind there may be resident winery dogs. Staff are accommodating and will usually offer a water bowl on request; bring your own as backup.

Known for. Traditionally made reds, particularly shiraz, grenache, mataro and tempranillo, poured in an intimate setting with knowledgeable staff and standout gorge views.

Getting there. The cellar door is at Lot 10, 193 Chaffeys Road, McLaren Vale, just off Main Road and a short rural drive from the township. There is on-site parking. Open daily 11am to 5pm.

Nearby with the dogs. Oliver's Taranga is a short drive for more dog-friendly tasting, and the Onkaparinga River National Park and Shiraz Trail offer on-lead walks close by.

When to go. Weekday afternoons are quietest and the gorge views are best in the soft light late in the day. Worth confirming indoor dog access on arrival, as it can depend on the day and crowd.
