Paxton Wines is a family-owned organic and biodynamic producer with a rustic cellar door in an 1850s shearing shed on Wheaton Road. Sprawling shaded lawns and a courtyard with vineyard views make it one of the more relaxed, dog-welcoming cellar doors at the gateway to the region.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome at the cellar door, on the shaded outdoor lawns and in the courtyard, with the dog settled beside you while you taste or share a platter. Well-behaved dogs are sometimes allowed inside for tastings with staff approval, handy in colder weather. Keep your dog on-lead at all times.

Known for. Certified organic and biodynamic wines, with standout shiraz, grenache and tempranillo, served in a relaxed historic setting with easy-going service.

Getting there. The address is 68 Wheaton Road, McLaren Vale, easily reached by car from the town centre. There is plenty of on-site parking. Open daily 10am to 5pm (closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Anzac Day and New Year's Day). Walk-ins welcome; groups of eight or more should book.

Nearby with the dogs. The Shiraz Trail runs nearby for an on-lead walk, neighbouring Doughballs serves wood-fired pizza, and Sellicks and Aldinga beaches are a short drive (check council signage for off-leash times).

When to go. Weekday afternoons are calmest on the lawns. Take a shaded spot on hot days, and ask about indoor seating in cold or wet weather.
