Bellwether Wines

Bellwether Wines sits on the old Glen Roy shearing shed site just off the Riddoch Highway, and it is one of the few Coonawarra cellar doors listed as dog-friendly by the Coonawarra Vignerons. The draw is the setting: a rustic, low-key working property where dogs are part of the furniture and you can taste minimal-intervention reds on the grounds rather than across a polished counter.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome on the grounds and outdoor areas, which suit a relaxed tasting in the open. Bring your own portable water bowl to be safe. There are farm animals on site, so keep your dog leashed and under control at all times. If you want to bring your dog inside the cellar door, confirm on arrival.

Staying over. Bellwether also runs glamping tents on the property, and pet-friendly options exist, but the details change by season and tent. Confirm dog policy, any fee, and which tents allow pets at the time you book rather than assuming.

Known for. Sustainable, low-intervention winemaking and a genuinely rustic atmosphere. During vintage you may see fermentation underway. It is a slower, more agricultural stop than the big estate cellar doors nearby.

Getting there. 14815 Riddoch Highway, Glenroy, directly off the B75 and easy to reach from Penola or Naracoorte. There is plenty of off-street parking on the property. Hours are commonly around midday to 4pm, but check ahead as they can shift.

Nearby with the dogs. The sealed Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail links Penola and Coonawarra and is an easy leashed stroll. Penola's main street, a short drive south, has shady spots and footpath dining. Several other Coonawarra cellar doors on the vignerons' dog-friendly list make it easy to build a day.
