Whispering Brook is a boutique, family-run winery on Rodd Street in Broke, in the quieter Broke Fordwich end of the Hunter Valley. It is known for Hunter shiraz and semillon alongside pioneering Portuguese varietals such as touriga nacional and arinto, plus estate-grown extra virgin olive oil, and well-behaved dogs are welcome in the outdoor cellar door areas on a lead.
The dog setup
Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seated tastings, on the wide covered verandahs and in the garden spaces, on a lead at all times. The grounds around the vines and olive groves give room for a leashed walk before or after your tasting, and staff are generally accommodating of calm dogs. This is a working farm, so the lead stays on for everyone's safety. Bring your own water and treats to be safe. Cellar door hours typically run Thursday to Saturday with other days by appointment, so call ahead on (02) 6579 1386 and mention your dog is coming.
Max: if you are staying the night in the guesthouse rather than just visiting the cellar door, ring ahead and get the pet policy in writing. Do not assume a dog-friendly tasting room means a dog-friendly bed.
The tasting
Seated tastings cover current and back-vintage releases alongside the estate-pressed olive oils. The guesthouse on site sleeps up to 18, and dogs can join on the accommodation side too, but you must let the estate know at the time of booking rather than assuming it carries over from the cellar door. Weekend and peak-season visits fill the car park, so arriving early or coming on a weekday gives you the run of the grove walks.
Getting there and parking
The cellar door is on Rodd Street via Hill Street in Broke, roughly two hours from Sydney via Cessnock or Freemans Waterhole. On-site parking is available, though it is worth arriving early on weekends.
