Greenway Wines is a small, family-run single vineyard at 350 Wollombi Road in Broke, best known for its big red barn cellar door and a line-up of left-of-centre varieties rather than the Hunter's usual Chardonnay and Semillon. Think Fiano, copper-hued Pinot Grigio, Merlot rose and Teroldego, all estate grown. The barn and its grounds are rustic and unpretentious, and the hosts have a local reputation for warmth. Because it is a micro-boutique operation, bookings ahead are recommended, particularly for weekends. Opening days are Friday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, and small cellar doors do shift hours seasonally, so check the website before you drive out. Weekends are the only days it opens, so expect more visitors and less room under the vines than you would find at a midweek stop elsewhere.
Getting there and parking
The cellar door is on Wollombi Road in Broke, about 20 minutes from Cessnock and a bit over two hours from Sydney, reachable via the scenic Wollombi Road run from either Cessnock or Wollombi village. On-site parking is straightforward, with a flat walk to the barn.
Pair it with
Broke is a compact wine strip, so a two-stop day is easy. Krinklewood Organic & Biodynamic Estate up the road has the Provencal gardens and a dog-friendly courtyard, and Whispering Brook rounds out the Wollombi Road trio. The village park in Broke is a handy leg-stretch between tastings.
