Lake Burley Griffin Loop

The Lake Burley Griffin loop from Yarralumla is a 4 to 5 kilometre circuit that stitches together the suburb's best dog-walking material: the elm-lined approaches to Government House, the cedar and pine stands of Westbourne Woods, and the lake shore itself. Allow 60 to 90 minutes, and note it can be extended onto the Weston Park peninsula for a largely paved 4.2 kilometre loop with open water and Telstra Tower views.

The walk

Starting near the Yarralumla shops or the dog park on Banks Street, the route meanders through some of the oldest planted woodland in Canberra before hitting the foreshore. The surface mix is sealed paths, gravel and quiet streets, with generous shade through summer thanks to the mature tree cover.

The loop earns its 4.6 rating from regulars who like variety: heritage streetscapes, bush pockets and lake views inside an hour. Cyclists share the lake paths, so the walking is steady rather than off-lead freedom.

Leash status

Dogs must be on leash on the shared paths and public areas around the lake, and on National Capital Authority land rules also require dogs to stay leashed and within 10 metres of shared paths, barbecue areas and public facilities. Fines apply for dogs not under effective control, so this is a leads-on loop.

The relief valve is nearby: the fully fenced Yarralumla Dog Park on Banks Street has separate areas for active and timid dogs, and Orana Bay on the foreshore offers a designated off-leash swimming spot where dogs can splash in the lake.

Max: I run the dog park first, then do the loop on lead. A tired dog makes a much better path companion, and Orana Bay makes a great halfway cool-off.

Water and watch-outs

Bring water, particularly in summer, as drinking points are spread thin along the route. Blue-green algae blooms can close the lake edges in warmer months, so check signage before letting your dog swim at Orana Bay.

Cyclists move quickly on the shared path, and kangaroos are occasionally sighted around Westbourne Woods at dawn and dusk, which surprises dogs used to suburban walks. Keep the lead short where paths narrow near the water.

Getting there

Yarralumla sits about 4 kilometres southwest of Canberra's city centre, with parking around the Bentham Street shops, Banks Street dog park and the Weston Park foreshore. The loop is flat enough to suit older dogs, and the tree cover keeps it comfortable outside peak heat.

When to go

Morning is the prime window, when the light on the lake is best and the paths are quiet, and autumn turns the heritage streets brilliant. Summer walks should finish before mid-morning, and weekdays beat weekends for cyclist-free stretches.
