Pemulwuy Loop

The Pemulwuy Loop follows Toongabbie Creek through the bushland behind Winston Hills, a 5.3 km circuit that feels a long way from the M2 despite running close to it. AllTrails rates it easy on the strength of its length and its lack of climbing, which undersells the surface: this is earth track, boardwalk and rocky steps, not a footpath.

The walk. About 5.3 km and an hour to an hour and a half. The route follows the creek line through remnant bush, crossing wooden boardwalks and short flights of rock steps, with narrow sections where two people cannot easily pass. Most walkers start at Third Settlement Reserve and take the loop from there.

The rules. On lead, throughout, under City of Parramatta Council. Stay on the marked path. The bush either side of the creek is remnant habitat and the tracks are narrow enough that a dog ranging off them does real damage. Bins are at the main entry points, including Third Settlement Reserve.

Water. Nothing for dogs on the trail. Fill up at Third Settlement Reserve before you start and carry it, since the creek is not a drink you want your dog taking.

Hazards. The rocky steps and boardwalks turn slippery after rain and stay that way for a while under the canopy. Some sections are steep and uneven, and a dog that pulls on a narrow ledge is a problem. Water dragons sun themselves along the creek and will set off most dogs, so expect a lunge or two.

Getting there. Park at Third Settlement Reserve on Edison Parade, Winston Hills, which also has toilets, a playground, barbecues and picnic tables. There is a second entry near the Bundilla Scout Camp at Old Toongabbie. Coming by car, exit the M2 at Abbott Road. Buses stop on Oakes Road and nearby streets, leaving a walk to the trailheads.

Nearby with the dogs. JUNE is the closest coffee with outdoor seating. For a fenced run afterwards, Barnett Park Fenced Dog Park is minutes away and Burlington Memorial Park Fenced Dog Park is the next one over at Northmead.

When to go. Midweek mornings or early afternoon. Weekend mornings fill with walkers, runners and families and the narrow sections back up. Give it a day or two after heavy rain. Good for big runners who want bush underfoot close to home.
