Wahgunyah Rail Trail

Between Rutherglen and Wahgunyah, the northern arm of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail heads through vineyard country toward the Murray River. The path is sealed, and dogs walk it on a lead.

Lead rules

Indigo Shire Council requires dogs to be securely leashed in public places. The only exceptions are its designated off-leash parks.

The walk

On the Wahgunyah end you pass old grapevines, open pastoral flats and cellar doors as the trail nears the river. The even, wide surface is easy on paws and simple to manage with a dog on a lead.

Getting started

The Wahgunyah Railway Reserve is the obvious start. It has parking and a day-use stopping area right by the trail, plus a pump track and natural play space if you have kids along.

There is some shade from maturing native trees around the reserve, but open sections of the trail get full sun.

Pepsi: Pack a bowl and a bottle. Bins and taps thin out once you leave town.

When to go

Summer afternoons are hot in this country, so walk early. The flat sealed path is well suited to older dogs.
