Wahgunyah Recreation Reserve Loop

The loop around the Wahgunyah Racecourse and Recreation Reserve is a gentle, flat circuit of the town's sports grounds, and it runs straight into the river red gum country of The Willows on the Murray. Dogs walk the reserve on a lead.

Leads and The Willows

Indigo Shire Council requires dogs on a lead in public spaces and reserves unless an area is signed off-lead. The recreation reserve is not, but The Willows next door is Wahgunyah's designated off-lead area, where dogs must be under effective voice control.

The walk

The track is compacted gravel and earth around open green space and sporting facilities. From there it flows into the Willows Reserve trail along the riverbank.

The sports-ground loop is fairly open, while the river trail sits under big old red gums with heavy shade.

Getting started

Park on site at the recreation and racecourse reserve, or at the Mass Tree car park near the trailhead. Bins are not placed evenly along the longer loops, so bring bags.

Drinking fountains on the sports loop may not be available outside pavilion hours, so carry water for the dog.

Max: The river is right there on The Willows side. Be sure of your dog's recall before you unclip near the water.

When to go

Skip weekend match days if you want the car park and loop to yourself. The flat ground suits dogs of any age.
