Tinderbox Hills Track

The Tinderbox Hills Track climbs an open bushland ridge on the edge of Kingston and Blackmans Bay, with wide views across Storm Bay and North West Bay. Dogs can only come for part of the year, so check the month before you set out.

When dogs are allowed

Kingborough Council allows dogs from April to June only, on lead and on the formed tracks. From July to March dogs are banned, to protect nesting wedge-tailed eagles.

The walk

It follows a wide fire trail with gravel, loose stones and several steep pinches. The track is about 3.8 kilometres and takes an hour to an hour and a half at a steady pace.

Native bush gives good shade for much of the way. There is no water on the track, so carry enough for your dog, and pack out your bags since bins are only near the street entries.

Park on the street near the residential entry points, such as around Estuary Drive in Blackmans Bay.

Max: Eagle season runs July to March, and the ban is there for a reason. Leave the dog at home in those months.

Make a day of it

When the track is closed to dogs, or for an off-lead run afterwards, head to Kingston View Drive Fenced Dog Park.

Plan it for an autumn outing between April and June. The loose, steep sections suit fit dogs with steady feet.
