McCauley's Beach Loop

McCauley's Beach sits between Thirroul and Sandon Point, just north of Bulli, and it is one of the Illawarra's 24/7 off-lead beaches. The loop links it to the coastal path, so you get both a run and a walk.

Leads and the off-lead area

Wollongong City Council marks McCauley's Beach as an off-leash area at all hours, with dogs under effective control. The access paths and other areas along the way are on lead.

Nearby Bulli Beach and Sandon Point Beach only allow dogs on lead in set morning and evening windows, so check the signs before you let go.

The walk

Surfaces change as you go, from paved coastal shared path to sandy tracks and grassy reserve. Expect ocean views, rocky headlands, surf breaks and coastal bushland.

A shallow creek and tidal lagoon give dogs a calm spot to paddle away from the surf.

Pepsi: The lagoon is the best bit for a young swimmer. Bring fresh water too, as there is little on the sand.

Getting started

Street parking is easiest near Corbett Avenue and Sandon Drive, where you will also find bins at the beach access points. Shade is scarce on the sand and the exposed paths.

Make a day of it

Finish with a coffee at 34 South Bulli or North Break Cafe in Woonona.

Go early on summer days, before the exposed sand heats up. It suits confident dogs who love the water.
