Edwardstown Oval

Edwardstown Oval, formally the Edwardstown Soldiers' Memorial Recreation Ground, lets you walk laps past a cycling velodrome, and much of the ground outside the sporting surfaces is open to dogs off lead.

Despite the name, it sits where Ascot Park meets South Plympton, in the City of Marion.

Where the lead goes on

The City of Marion requires dogs on a lead on the oval, the tennis courts and the velodrome track, and within 5 metres of play equipment. Elsewhere dogs may be off lead under effective control, unless organised sport is under way.

The walk

A perimeter path mixes hard and loose surfaces, with a looping track around the velodrome. Along it you pass memorial gardens, playgrounds and fitness equipment.

Drinking fountains and a public toilet block are on site, with street parking and bays alongside. Shade is limited to the trees around the edges.

It Takes A Village in Edwardstown and Omnivore cafe in Ascot Park are both handy for a coffee.

When to go

The main oval is exposed to full sun, so summer walks work best early or late. Check whether a game is on before letting the dog go.
