Yarrowee River Trail (Docwra St Bridge Access)

The Yarrowee River Trail follows the river corridor through Sebastopol on Ballarat's south side, and the Docwra St Bridge car park is a straightforward local access point. It is a flat, well-maintained gravel path mixing open riverside views with shaded runs under native trees, an easy out-and-back for an everyday walk.

The walk

From the bridge the path runs north toward central Ballarat or south into quieter, more rural-feeling stretches, so you can set the distance by turning around whenever suits. The surface is wide, flat gravel that is easy underfoot for most dogs.

The wider trail network stretches some 16 kilometres through Ballarat, but the Sebastopol section works as a standalone walk, and the full loop commitment is never required on an out-and-back.

Worth knowing

Dogs stay on leash along the trail under City of Ballarat local laws, and the path is shared with cyclists and runners so a short lead matters on the narrower sections. Keep dogs on the gravel rather than the riverbank, which softens and gets muddy after rain.

This stretch has no benches or water stations, so bring your own water and a bowl, and carry waste out if the car park bins are full. Motorbikes occasionally use the reserve, which is worth knowing if your dog is noise sensitive.

Pepsi: an out-and-back is my favourite format. Turn around when the tail says so, no loop commitments, and the gravel keeps my paws clean unless it has rained.

Getting there

Access is via Docwra Street in Sebastopol, an easy run off Albert Street, with a dedicated car park at the bridge. It is a local trail rather than a destination walk, so parking is rarely a problem.

Hazards

Muddy riverbank after rain, occasional motorbikes in the reserve, and fast bikes on the shared path.

When to go

Weekday mid-mornings are the quietest, and after heavy rain plan a shorter walk.
