Rosstown Railway Trail

The Rosstown Rail Trail follows the line of a private railway William Murray Ross built in the late 1800s, a venture that never really worked out. Today it is a suburban walking route through Caulfield South, and dogs stay on a lead for most of it.

Leads and the off-lead area

Glen Eira City Council requires dogs on a lead on the trail's reserve paths and along street footpaths. Some parks on the route, such as EE Gunn Reserve, have their own mix of on-lead and off-lead zones, so read the signs as you enter.

The walk

This is not one continuous path. Sealed shared paths through green linear reserves alternate with ordinary footpaths and quiet streets where the route shares the road.

Beyond Caulfield South it links Elsternwick with Carnegie and Murrumbeena, then runs on toward Hughesdale and Oakleigh, so you can walk as little or as much as you like.

Make a day of it

Finish with a coffee at Fress Cafe, or add a lap of Princes Park.

When to go

The street sections make it best for calm dogs that walk well on a lead. The sealed surfaces are easy on older dogs, and a bottle of water for the dog is worth carrying.
