James Ruse Reserve

Busy, bright and built for families, James Ruse Reserve on Hassall Street sits in Parramatta near the Harris Park border. Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Lead rules

The City of Parramatta does not list the reserve as an off-leash area, so dogs stay on a lead throughout. Keep them well back from the water playground and skate park, where children gather.

What it's like

Accessible paved paths with sandstone edging run between grassy areas, an interactive water playground and a modern skate park. Mature trees and shade structures around the play areas give cover.

Bins are spread through the grounds. Bring a travel bowl, as dedicated dog bubblers are limited.

Parking is on nearby streets, and it can be limited or paid at peak times.

Make a day of it

For off-lead time, FS Garside Park Fenced Dog Park in Granville is fully enclosed. Alfred Street Pantry in Rosehill is handy for coffee.

It suits dogs that are relaxed around skateboards, water play and children. A nervous dog will do better somewhere quieter.
