What visitors mention
Wilksch Walk is a shorter bushland track in the Flat Rock Gully reserve system in Northbridge, running roughly 30 to 60 minutes on its own and connecting into the wider Tunks Park and Saltpan Creek network for a longer outing. Expect native bush, patches of rainforest, sandy creek sections and glimpses of the harbour.
The rules. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on-leash on the marked trail and around the playground areas at either end, in line with Willoughby Council's rules for the Flat Rock Gully area. Some online trail notes mention off-leash pockets nearby, but that isn't confirmed by council, so treat the whole walk as on-leash and check signage on the day. The track borders Garigal National Park, where dogs are not permitted at all, so stay on the Wilksch Walk side of any boundary.
Terrain. Unsealed natural track with some steep sections and stone steps, plus creek crossings that get slippery in wet weather. Waterproof shoes are worth it after rain.
What's there. Parking at Tunks Park (upper and lower) or at the end of Small Street near Willoughby Leisure Centre. Toilets and a picnic area with playground are at Tunks Park. No water points on the track itself, so carry your own.
Getting there. By car, turn into Tunks Park off Sailors Bay Road, or park on Small Street, Willoughby. Sydney Buses running along Sailors Bay Road stop within easy walking distance of the trailheads.
Nearby with the dogs. The Incinerator Cafe on Small Street is right near one trailhead with a dog-friendly outdoor area. The Local Cafe and Ritual Coffee Traders on Sailors Bay Road both have pet-friendly outdoor seating if you finish nearer the Northbridge shops.
Weekend mornings between 8am and 11am draw the most walkers and joggers; weekday afternoons are the quiet option. A good short-to-medium walk for a dog that's fine on-leash and doesn't mind some steps and a bit of mud after rain.
