Wilksch Walk

Wilksch Walk is the bushland track that runs through the Flat Rock Gully reserve system between Northbridge and Willoughby on Sydney's Lower North Shore, giving you rainforest patches, sandy creek sections and sandstone country only minutes from the city. On its own it is a 30 to 60 minute outing, but it links into the wider Tunks Park and Saltpan Creek network when you want a longer day out.

The walk

The track is unsealed and natural, with steep sections, stone steps and creek crossings along the way, and the full circuit of the gully system runs roughly 3 to 4 kilometres depending on your route. Count on 1 to 1.5 hours at a dog pace, with the greenery and harbour glimpses doing most of the entertaining.

This is genuine bushland in the middle of suburbia, which is exactly why it works for dogs: the scent load is high and the shade is real. The walk is not pram friendly, and the footing turns tricky when the creek runs.

Leash status

Willoughby City Council requires dogs on leash at all times on the formal walking tracks through Flat Rock Gully, and there is no off-leash allowance on this walk; the protection of native wildlife and the creek habitat is the reason. Keep the lead on even where the trail looks quiet.

The boundary matters too: the track edges Garigal National Park, where dogs are not permitted at all, so stick to the Wilksch Walk side of any signage. Playground areas near the trailheads are also strict on-leash zones.

Max: the creek crossings are where leads get tangled, so I shorten mine before the stepping stones and let my dog drink only where the water runs clear and moving.

Water and watch-outs

There are no reliable dog water points on the track, so carry your own for both of you and bring waste bags out with you rather than counting on dispensers. Stone steps and slick creek crossings are the hazards to respect, especially after rain.

Getting there

Access is off Flat Rock Drive in Northbridge NSW 2063, with parking at the Small Street trailhead end near the Willoughby side. The walk sits between the suburbs of Willoughby and Northbridge, about 8 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD.

When to go

Early mornings are coolest and quietest, and the canopy keeps the middle of the day workable outside high summer. Skip it during and after heavy rain, when the creek crossings turn genuinely slippery, and weekends see the most traffic from other walkers.
