Dam Wall Lookouts

The Dam Wall Lookouts sit inside Lake Parramatta Reserve, reached off Wilmott Street in North Parramatta, a few minutes from the Parramatta CBD. Seated lookouts give you a view over the dam wall and the freshwater lake, and dogs are welcome on lead on the walking tracks, which is the fact that decides whether this suits your day.

The walk

The lookout is an easy 300 metre one-way stroll from the visitor hub on the Heritage Path, so it works even for a short outing. For a proper walk, the Lake Circuit loops about 4.2km around the water in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, passing the lookouts along the way, and the Arrunga Bardo Walk adds a 900 metre bushland branch. The main lookout path is manageable underfoot; the wider circuit has uneven surfaces, some stairs and creek crossings, worth factoring in for an older or small dog.

Leash status

Dogs must be leashed at all times and kept to the established tracks; there is no off-leash anywhere in the reserve, which is a wildlife protection area. Dogs also need to stay 10 metres clear of playgrounds and the designated swimming area near the visitor hub, and dog swimming is not on offer here, the lake bathers' area is for people only.

Max: this is fresh water, not tidal, but after heavy rain the Hunts Creek crossings can flood and become impassable. Check council alerts before you set out.

Water and hazards

There are no bubblers or taps along the bush trails, so carry water and a bowl for both of you. Snakes are a warm-season consideration in the bushland, and the creek stepping stones turn slick or submerged after rain. Waste must be binned, so bring bags.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via O'Connell Street to the free car park at the end of Wilmott Street, or catch a bus from Parramatta Station towards Pennant Hills Road and walk in. The reserve hub has public toilets, picnic and playground areas, and The Container Parramatta at the trackhead takes dogs at its outdoor tables.

When to go

Weekday mornings are quietest. Weekends, public holidays and warm afternoons in spring and summer draw crowds and fill the car park, which makes the narrower track sections congested.
