Dan Mahoney Reserve Fenced Dog Park

Dan Mahoney Reserve at 75 Gladstone Street is one of the bigger fenced off-leash parks in the Parramatta area, and the reason locals keep coming is practical: a double-gated entry, a separate pen for small or timid dogs, and floodlights that keep the main field usable into the evening. This is a busy, social ground rather than a quiet bush reserve.

The dog setup

The main oval is fully fenced with double-gated airlocks, so escape risk is low even for a bolter. Keep your dog in sight and under voice control, pick up after them, and take out any dog that is not coping with the crowd; restricted and dangerous breeds are barred from off-leash zones under the NSW Companion Animals Act. Water bubblers are spaced through the park, including one inside the small-dog section, with bench seating, perimeter bins and what shade the edge trees give.

Worth knowing

Shade on the open field is limited, so on hot days both the grass and the dogs cook by midday; go early or wait for the floodlights. The council's Heart of Play masterplan lists the reserve for remediation and future upgrades, so check the City of Parramatta page before a special trip in case works have closed part of the ground. The reserve is a genuine community spot too: the annual Santa Paws event packs in a couple of hundred dogs each December.

Getting there and parking

Free street parking is generally available in the residential streets off Gladstone Street. Buses run along Church Street and Victoria Road nearby, and the park is walkable from North Parramatta's centre.

When to go

The weekday after-work rush and Sunday afternoons are the peak, when the field becomes a proper dog social. Mid-morning on a weekday is the calm session if your dog prefers space to scrum.
