Keirle Park to Cabbage Tree Bay via Manly Beach Promenade

This is the classic Sydney beachfront walk with a dog on the lead: start at Keirle Park in North Manly, follow the flat paved promenade the length of Manly Beach past Queenscliff, North Steyne and South Steyne, and finish on the Marine Parade walkway above Cabbage Tree Bay by Shelly Beach. Ocean views the whole way, coffee stops everywhere, and enough length to count as a real outing.

The walk

From Keirle Park on Pittwater Road, head south to pick up the promenade and simply stay on the sealed path. The route runs roughly 2.5 kilometres one way through Queenscliff, along North Steyne and South Steyne, then continues along the walkway towards Fairy Bower and the Shelly Beach headland. It is one-way rather than a loop, so budget the return trip on foot or use transport from the Manly end. Allow 30 to 40 minutes each way before you add stops.

Leash status

On-lead the entire way, no exceptions. The promenade and footpaths are dog-friendly under Northern Beaches Council rules, but dogs are banned from the sand at Manly Beach, Fairy Bower and Shelly Beach at all times, on-lead or not. The rocky shore of Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve is protected habitat for fairy penguins and eastern water dragons and is off-limits too. Sticking to the pavement is the whole deal.

Water and terrain

The path is flat, wide and sealed, easy for stiff hips and small legs alike. Bubblers with dog bowls sit along North and South Steyne, public toilets appear at Queenscliff, North Steyne and near Fairy Bower, and bins and benches are frequent enough that you carry almost nothing. Summer heat builds on the paving, so aim early.

Getting there and parking

Paid parking sits at the Keirle Park lot with street parking along North Steyne, though both tighten badly on beach days. The Manly Ferry to Manly Wharf works if you want to start from the south, and bus 144 runs through the corridor.

Worth knowing

Rangers do patrol this stretch, and the sand and aquatic reserve bans are enforced rather than theoretical. Foot traffic gets heavy on weekends and school holidays, so a confident, settled on-lead walker is the right dog for this route. Nervous dogs cope far better on an early weekday morning.

While you're out there

An off-lead session before or after balances the leash rules nicely: the Hinkler Park dog enclosure sits at the walk's start and the Manly Lagoon dog park is a short detour. The Shelly Beach via Queenscliff Beach walk is a shorter coastal option, and Coopers Speciality Coffee handles the post-walk coffee. When to go

Early morning is the pick in summer, for cooler paving and lighter crowds. Late afternoon works in the cooler months, and weekday mornings are the calmest window for dogs that find promenade bustle a lot.
